The Future of Retirement in Brazil

In Brazil, family, friends, good health and strong religious faith are
viewed as the greatest sources of satisfaction and happiness in later life.
Brazilians generally view retirement as a time for rest and relaxation. Older
Brazilians will most likely want to work, but will seek a comfortable mix
of work and leisure. The majority of Brazilians support enforced additional
private savings as the best approach to avoid a retirement funding shortfall.

  • During
retirement, pre-retirees would like to spend more time with their families,
relatives, and friends as well as travel and spend their savings.
  • As they
get older, Brazilians’ concerns are about becoming ill, losing their memory,
having too little money and losing their home.
  • Many think
government pensions will offer less support than they should. Instead, they
expect their children and families to provide the extra care and support
    they will need.

Brazil’s employers are very positive about older workers, being the most
likely to see them as more productive and flexible than younger workers. They
score highly on actively trying to recruit older employees but, like all countries,
aren’t providing the flexible working policies many people are looking for.
Brazilian employers are the most likely in the world to believe that the government
should bear most of the costs of supporting people in retirement rather than
employers, families or individuals.
